



Tim Hill
music, noise, performance and research
Tim Hill is a musician and artist creating outdoor celebrations, shows and music. Inspired first by encountering, and then working for, the pioneering arts company Welfare State International, he plays with and researches traditions of outdoor ritual and celebration, processions, street music and outdoor noise.
Tim has played with samba bands around Stonehenge and on the back of trucks at Notting Hill Carnival, led giants through the streets of London, Dublin and Galway, created Olympic Torch events, cooked celebratory feasts, written wassail songs, and led funeral services
Tim is festival director of The Sound of the Streets, a charity promoting street bands and street music and supporting young people to play this inspiring music. http://www.thesoundofthestreets.com
He has been musical director on the Wye Valley River Festival since 2016. He has also been musical director for many outdoor arts companies, including Cirque Bijou, Liverpool Lantern Company, Macnas, Walk the Plank, ‘Wayfaring’ a project by ‘And Now’. and ‘The Band at the End of the World for Ramshaklicious.
He has helped start many street bands around the country including The Big Noise in Taunton, The Horns of Plenty in Oxford, the Exeter Street band and the Frome Street Bandits.
With the Mellstock Band he recreates the English rural music of the 18th and 19th centuries, appearing in many TV and film productions including the classic BBC Pride and Prejudice. Tim has lectured and talked at several Universities, colleges and conferences.
Tim gives talks and lectures and creates podcasts on a variety of related subjects: the social history of seasonal celebrations, parades and processions, celebratory noise and outdoor music making. You can hear his podcast about street bands here
